Crappie: These tasty panfish are a favorite for good reason. In Truman and the Ozarks, we're talking about slabs that'll make your eyes pop. Spring is prime time when they move shallow to spawn, but we can put you on them year-round. Whether you're jigging brush piles or spider-rigging, the thump of a big crappie is pure joy. And let's not forget – they're delicious!
White Bass: When these silver bullets are running, hold onto your hat! White bass move in schools, so when you find 'em, it's often fast and furious action. They hit hard and fight above their weight class. Look for them to start their spring run up the tributaries, but they're a blast to catch all summer long when they chase shad on the surface. Nothing beats the sight of a school of whites busting bait on a calm morning.
Striped Bass: Now we're talking about some serious pull. Stripers in these lakes can grow to impressive sizes, and they're not afraid to take you for a ride. These line-strippers often hang out in deeper water, following schools of shad. Trolling or casting big lures can entice these bruisers to strike. When a big striper hits, you'd better have your drag set right!
Blue Catfish: If you're after a true giant, blue cats are your target. These whiskered monsters can grow well over 50 pounds in Truman and the Ozarks. They're the apex predators of the lake, and tangling with one is an experience you won't forget. We typically target them in deeper water using cut bait or live bait. The fight of a big blue cat is like trying to winch in a Volkswagen – get ready for some serious rod-bending action!
Let's face it – there's something special about these lakes that keeps folks coming back year after year. Maybe it's the thrill of never knowing what might be on the end of your line next. Or perhaps it's the peace and quiet of an early morning on the water, with nothing but the sound of lapping waves and the occasional splash of a jumping fish. Our guests tell us it's a combination of great fishing, beautiful scenery, and the chance to make memories with family and friends. And let's not forget the bragging rights that come with landing a trophy fish!

Crappie are popular panfish, usually 8-12 inches but sometimes pushing 15. You'll find them around brush piles, fallen trees, and dock pilings in 6-15 feet of water. Spring is prime time as they move shallow to spawn, but you can catch them year-round. These fish are fun on light tackle and great eating. Small jigs and minnows are go-to baits. Crappie often suspend in schools, so once you find the right depth, you can catch a bunch. Fall can be excellent as they feed heavily before winter. One trick: use your electronics to find suspended schools, then vertical jig right above them. There's nothing quite like filling a cooler with tasty crappie for a fish fry!
Blue catfish are monsters in our lakes, often growing over 40 inches and 80 pounds. You'll find them in deep holes and channels, especially near creek mouths. They're opportunistic feeders, so fresh cut bait is your best bet - I like using shad or bluegill. Let it sink to the bottom and be patient. These fish put up an incredible fight, especially the big ones. Fall and early winter are prime times as they feed heavily before the cold sets in. Bring heavy tackle and gloves - their slime makes them slippery. One local trick: target areas with woody cover in 15-30 feet of water. The satisfaction of landing a trophy blue cat is hard to beat. Just be ready for a battle!
Striped bass are powerhouses in our lakes, commonly 15-30 pounds but capable of topping 50. They're open-water predators, so look for them chasing shad schools near main lake points and along channel edges. Early morning and late evening are prime times, especially in summer when they seek cooler, deeper water during the day. These fish put up an epic fight - be ready for long runs and powerful surges. Live bait like shad or skipjack works great, but artificial lures can be effective too. Fall is fantastic as stripers feed heavily before winter. One local secret: troll main lake humps with deep-diving crankbaits when the bite is tough. Landing a big striper is an experience you won't forget!
White bass are scrappy fighters that typically run 10-14 inches. They're schooling fish, so when you find one, you've found a bunch. Look for them near points, humps, and drop-offs, often in 15-25 feet of water. Spring is fantastic as they make their spawning runs up creeks and rivers. These fish are a blast on light tackle. They hit hard and fast - small jigs, spinners, and live minnows all work well. Locals love 'em for their tasty white meat. One tip: watch for seagulls diving - that often means white bass are pushing bait to the surface. When you see that, cast into the frenzy and hold on tight!
